Joseph Becomes a Victim of Jealousy

        37:3-9, 11, 23, 24, 28

Joseph’s experience illustrates the harmful effects of improper jealousy. Match the scriptures to the reasons why we should stamp down any feelings we may have of improper jealousy.

        SCRIPTURE

        REASON

        • Jealous people will not inherit God’s Kingdom

        • Jealousy disrupts the peace and unity of the congregation

        • Jealousy harms us physically

        • Jealousy blinds us from seeing the good in others

What situations might cause us to become jealous?

          LIVING AS CHRISTIANS

          Are You Prepared?

If a natural disaster strikes your area, are you prepared? Earthquakes, hurricanes, forest fires, and floods can occur suddenly and be very destructive. In addition, terrorist attacks, unrest, and epidemics can occur anywhere and without warning. (Ec 9:11) We should not assume that such events will never occur where we live.

Each of us must take reasonable steps to prepare for a disaster. (Pr 22:3) Although Jehovah’s organization provides a measure of assistance in times of disaster, this does not mean that we have no personal responsibility.—Ga 6:5, ftn.

              Jehovah Never Abandoned Joseph

              39:1, 12-14, 20-23

During Joseph’s many trials, Jehovah made “everything that he did successful” and granted him “favor in the eyes of the chief officer of the prison.” (Ge 39:2, 3, 21-23) What lessons can we learn from this account?

              • Our trials do not mean that we have lost Jehovah’s favor.—Ps 34:19

              • We should try to discern how Jehovah is blessing us and be thankful.—Php 4:6, 7

              • We should look to Jehovah to sustain us.—Ps 55:22

                Be Like Joseph—Flee From Immorality

Joseph provides a good example for us if we are tempted to commit sexual immorality. Each time the wife of his master tried to seduce him, he refused. (Ge 39:7-10) His reply: “How could I commit this great badness and actually sin against God?” indicated that he had already given thought to Jehovah’s view of marital faithfulness. Then when the situation became critical, he fled instead of lingering and giving the woman a chance to weaken his resolve.—Ge 39:12; 1Co 6:18.

What discerning question did Jin ask himself when Mee-Kyong asked him to help her with her math homework?

                    Jehovah Delivers Joseph

                    41:9-13, 16, 29-32, 38-40

Joseph suffered as a slave and a prisoner for about 13 years before Jehovah delivered him. Rather than becoming bitter, Joseph let this experience refine him. (Ps 105:17-19) He knew that Jehovah never abandoned him. How did Joseph make the best of his situation?

                    • Joseph passing out food to other prisoners.

He showed industriousness and trustworthiness, giving Jehovah a basis to bless him.—Ge 39:21, 22

                    • Joseph interpreting the dreams of two prisoners.

He took an interest in others instead of plotting revenge against those who mistreated him.—Ge 40:5-7

How does Joseph’s experience help me endure my problems?

Until Jehovah delivers me at Armageddon, how can I make the best of my situation?

                        Joseph Shows Great Self-Control

                        42:5-7, 14-17, 21, 22

Can you imagine the strong emotions that Joseph may have felt when he unexpectedly came face-to-face with his brothers? He could have immediately identified himself and then either embraced them or taken revenge. But he did not act on impulse. What will you do if you are the victim of injustice from family members or others? Joseph’s example teaches the value of exercising self-control and remaining calm rather than following our treacherous heart and acting on imperfect impulses.

How can you imitate Joseph in situations that you encounter?
