About Vegvísir

Vegvísir takes its name from the Icelandic wayfinder—a symbol said to help a traveler keep their bearings in rough weather. That is what this site is for: not to send you somewhere new, but to help you orient while you analyze, understand, and research Watchtower study articles and other Jehovah’s Witness publications—especially JW teachings—on their own terms.

Study material is written to guide readers toward a single conclusion. The questions, the framing, and the “application” paragraphs all point in one direction. Vegvísir does not argue you toward another faith or away from belief. It offers reference points so you can see how the text is built: what it says, how it is interpreted, and what it asks of you in the meeting and in daily life.

How it works

Open a week’s study article and read it paragraph by paragraph, as published. Where a study question appears, you can open two lenses side by side: the expected meeting answer — what a Witness would say in response to that paragraph’s study question — and scholarship notes, a neutral, evidence-based look at the paragraph in context and against the article’s overall theme. We watch for loaded language, appeals to authority, guilt and fear, and the moment the text pivots from a Bible story to present-day obedience to the organization.

Tap scripture citations to read the verse text in several translations. Step through analysis paragraph by paragraph, like checking your bearing at each landmark along the route. Claims worth verifying are flagged so you can judge them yourself using the citations and scholarship notes on this site.

A private place for honest study

The Vegvísir was meant to be carried by the traveler—not displayed for someone else’s scrutiny. Notes you keep in official study apps may be readable by the app developer or the organization behind them. We mention that not to frighten you, but so you can choose where you do your most honest thinking.

This site is not affiliated with Jehovah’s Witnesses or the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Comments, research, and notes you enter here are yours—independent of that organization. That makes this a safer place to read carefully, ask hard questions, and write the analysis you actually mean, without worrying it might follow you elsewhere.

What we are not

This is not an anti-religious project, an atheist project, or outreach from another faith tradition. Many readers are sincere people who were taught to trust a single source of truth. The aim is careful scholarship and undogmatized analysis: describing what the text says, how it is framed, and what it asks of readers—without ridicule, without telling anyone what to believe, and without treating any institution as above fair-minded inquiry. A compass does not choose your destination; it helps you know where you stand. Vegvísir is that kind of tool for study.

About the analysis

Optional notes on study articles follow the spirit of mainstream biblical scholarship: readers with training in historical and literary context, writing from a non-religious standpoint rather than to promote or attack any faith. The aim is closer to the careful, accessible work of scholars such as Dan McClellan or Bart Ehrman — an evidence-based lens that tries to avoid dogmatic interpretation and to understand the settings and traditions in which these texts were written and later read.

Notes describe rhetorical and organizational patterns using established frameworks for undue influence; they are commentary, not a clinical or legal judgment about any individual.
